PRINT ON DEMAND

Print on Demand vs Dropshipping: Which Is Better in India?

By Nishkarsh Sharma

Short answer: in dropshipping you sell your supplier's ready made products, in print on demand you sell your own designs printed on products. Neither needs stock or inventory. Print on demand has lower returns, around 10 percent RTO versus 40 to 50 for generic dropshipping products, and builds into a brand, while dropshipping offers unlimited product variety and rides viral trends. For most beginners in India, print on demand is the better starting point, and I say that as someone who runs and teaches both.

Print on Demand vs Dropshipping: Read This First

This is one of the most common questions I get, and most answers online are written by people who have run neither model. I run both. Our print on demand businesses have crossed 50 crore in revenue, and since 2019 we have mentored students whose print on demand businesses have crossed 70 crore combined and whose dropshipping businesses have crossed 100 crore combined. So this comparison is not theory, it is what we see across hundreds of real Indian businesses every day.

The Models in One Minute

Both models share the same skeleton. You build a Shopify store, a supplier holds the product side, customers come through Meta ads, and you keep the difference. No stock, no inventory, no warehouse. The difference is what you sell.

In dropshipping, you sell products that already exist, your supplier's catalog. Kitchen choppers, posture correctors, neck fans, whatever is trending. Your skill is product research: spotting what is viral, unique, and genuinely problem solving before everyone else does. I broke down that full process in dropshipping kaise kare.

In print on demand, you sell your own designs printed on products, t-shirts, hoodies, mugs. The product is the design and the emotion it expresses. A t-shirt is a billboard for identity. Your skill is design research: finding what people want to say about themselves. That full process is in how to start a t-shirt business in India.

Difference 1: What You Are Actually Selling

In dropshipping, you sell utility. The product solves a problem, and the customer compares you on price and delivery, because the same product exists elsewhere. When a product goes viral, three new competitors run ads for it every other day.

In print on demand, you sell expression. Your design is yours, nobody else has it. That uniqueness changes customer behavior in a way that shows up everywhere in the numbers, starting with the biggest one.

Difference 2: RTO, the Number That Decides Profit in India

RTO, orders returned undelivered, is the silent killer of Indian ecommerce, and it is where these models separate hardest.

Generic dropshipping products, especially low intent impulse buys, run brutal RTO. Think of the viral hair oil everyone ordered emotionally and then refused at the door because deep down it felt like a scam, products like that run 40 to 50 percent RTO, and the loss lands on you. That is why I teach dropshippers to obsess over high intent products, it is survivable, but you are always managing it.

Print on demand runs around 10 percent RTO in our stores. The customer is waiting for a unique design they chose and cannot buy anywhere else, so they accept delivery. And returned pieces are not dead money: your supplier holds them and reships against new orders for around 100 rupees shipping instead of full product cost. In one documented campaign, 313 of 324 returned pieces were reshipped and sold. The full economics are in t-shirt business profit and investment in India.

Difference 3: Trends vs Evergreen

Dropshipping is a trend game. Products come and go, fidget spinners once, hand massagers now, and platforms churn too, India's leading dropshipping supplier shut down and the model kept moving. That is not a flaw, it is the nature of the game: you profit by riding waves early and moving to the next one. It rewards speed and constant research.

Print on demand leans evergreen. An emotional father and son design, a cricket quote, a spiritual concept, these sell year after year, plus predictable festival and occasion spikes you can plan months ahead. One design can run profitably for months, our documented case made about 9.25 lakh profit from a single design in two months.

Difference 4: The Brand Ceiling

Here is the difference almost nobody talks about. A dropshipping store is very hard to turn into a brand, because you sell products anyone can sell. The business is real, and our students have done 100 crore plus with it, but it stays a performance marketing machine.

Print on demand has a built in upgrade path. Your designs are your brand identity from day one, and winning designs can move to bulk production for better margins, real fabric control, and a genuine clothing brand. One of our students took exactly that path from zero to a 10 to 12 lakh a month streetwear brand, I documented it in how to start a clothing brand in India. Dropshipping has no equivalent ladder.

Difference 5: Speed and Skill Fit

Dropshipping is faster to test across many products, no design work, list and advertise, and suits people who love hunting trends and reading markets daily.

Print on demand asks for one extra step, the design, but AI collapsed that cost to zero, the exact workflow is in how to start a t-shirt business with AI. It suits people who connect with a niche, gym, spirituality, humor, cricket, and want to build something that compounds.

Margins wise, both live and die by the same rule: your ad efficiency. In both models we hold return on ad spend between 5 and 6, and in both, the pricing discipline matters, dropshipping needs 2.5 to 3.5 times cost, print on demand runs 799 to 899 against roughly 400 in costs.

So Which Should You Start With?

My honest recommendation for most beginners in India: start with print on demand. The RTO advantage protects you while you learn, evergreen designs forgive slower testing, AI removed the design barrier, and everything you build compounds toward a possible brand. It is the gentler on ramp to the same core skills, store building, Meta ads, testing discipline.

Choose dropshipping instead if product research genuinely excites you more than design, you want maximum product variety, and you are ready to manage RTO aggressively with high intent products from day one. It is a real, proven path, our students' numbers say so, it just demands sharper reflexes earlier.

And the skills transfer completely. Many of our students run both eventually. The wrong choice is not picking the wrong model, it is spending six more months choosing instead of testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between print on demand and dropshipping?

In dropshipping you sell your supplier's ready made products, in print on demand you sell your own designs printed on products like t-shirts and hoodies. Neither requires stock or inventory, both run on Shopify and Meta ads, the difference is whether the product is a trend you found or a design you own.

Which is more profitable, print on demand or dropshipping?

Both can be very profitable, our students have crossed 70 crore combined in print on demand and 100 crore combined in dropshipping. Print on demand protects margins better through low RTO, around 10 percent versus 40 to 50 for generic products, while dropshipping can spike harder on viral trends. Ad efficiency decides profit in both.

Is print on demand better for beginners in India?

For most beginners, yes. Lower RTO protects you while you learn, evergreen designs sell year round, AI creates designs free, and winning designs can grow into a real clothing brand. Choose dropshipping first only if trend hunting genuinely excites you more than design.

Why is RTO lower in print on demand than dropshipping?

Because the customer is waiting for a unique design they chose and cannot buy anywhere else, so they accept delivery. Generic dropshipping products, especially impulse buys, get refused at the door far more often, and returned print on demand pieces get reshipped against new orders for a small fee instead of full loss.

Can I do both print on demand and dropshipping?

Yes, and many of our students eventually do. The core skills, store building, Meta ads, testing discipline, transfer completely between the models. Start with one, get profitable, then expand, running both from day one splits your focus before you have earned either.

Which needs more investment, print on demand or dropshipping?

They cost about the same to start: a Shopify plan and an ad testing budget, with no stock investment in either. Print on demand designs are free with AI. The hidden cost difference is RTO, high return rates in dropshipping can quietly consume a beginner's budget faster.

Can dropshipping become a brand like print on demand can?

It is much harder, because you sell products anyone else can also sell. Print on demand designs are your brand identity from day one, and winners can move to bulk production and become a genuine clothing brand, a path one of our students took to 10 to 12 lakh a month.
