PRINT ON DEMAND

How to Start a Print on Demand Business in India (2026 Guide)

By Nishkarsh Sharma

What if I told you that you can start a t-shirt business from home, for free, without buying a single t-shirt upfront?

No printing machine. No inventory. No packaging material. No courier runs. Someone else prints, someone else ships, and you sit in the middle collecting profit.

That is print on demand India in a nutshell. And I have been doing this since 2017. My printed t-shirt business has crossed 50 crore in revenue. My students have done over 60 crore combined in their own businesses using this exact model.

This guide covers everything you need to start. The model, the research process, where to find designs, how to run ads, which suppliers to use, and what numbers to expect.

What is print on demand and how does it work

The concept is simple. You are the business owner sitting in the middle.

Customers come to your website, see t-shirts with designs on them, and place an order. The moment that order comes in, it goes directly to your supplier. The supplier prints your design on a blank t-shirt and ships it straight to the customer. You never touch the product. You keep the margin in the middle.

Here is the basic math. Sell a t-shirt for 800 rupees. Your supplier charges you 400 including printing and shipping. Your profit before marketing costs is 400. Subtract whatever you spent on ads to bring that customer in. What remains is yours.

That is it. That is the whole model.

This same model works on thousands of products beyond t-shirts. Hoodies, mugs, phone cases, cushions, anything where a design gets printed. But t-shirts are where most people start, and for good reason. The market is massive, the margins are decent, and the entry point is low.

Why most people fail before they even start

The single biggest mistake I see people make is picking random designs and hoping something sells. That is not a strategy. That is gambling.

The right approach is to sell designs that are already proven to work. Designs that are already selling for someone else. Not copied, not stolen, but inspired. You look at what is working in the market, take the concept, make it similar but better, and launch it yourself.

The market in print on demand India is large enough that even if five other people are selling the same type of design, there is room for you. Customers buying on Instagram or Facebook do not know your design exists elsewhere. They see your ad and they buy. That is how it works.

How to find winning designs for your t-shirt business

There is a tool called Minea. I use it for my own business and I have been recommending it for years. It is an ad spy tool that shows you what is currently running and getting engagement across Facebook and Instagram.

Here is the process. Go to Minea, filter by India, search for t-shirts, and sort by engagement. You will see hundreds of ads for printed t-shirts running right now. Look at the ones with 3,000 to 10,000 likes. Those are not random. Those are proven.

What you are looking for is the type of design, the theme, the sentiment. Religious designs, regional pride, funny Hindi text, gaming references, motivational quotes. Take screenshots of everything that looks strong.

Then go to the Shops section on Minea. Filter by India, search t-shirts, sort by engagement. Now you can see entire stores that are selling printed t-shirts with high traffic. Click into their websites. Go to their collections. Sort by best selling. Now you know exactly what designs are working for them right now.

Minea also has a Products section where you can filter by target audience and see what is selling in India in the last 24 hours. That is live data. There is no better research method.

Also use their Europe Spy feature. Products that blow up in Europe often come to India 6 to 18 months later. Spotting them early gives you an advantage.

Once you have 15 to 20 design references, take all of that to a designer on Fiverr. Tell them to create something similar but better. Same energy, same theme, different enough to be original. Good designers on Fiverr will do this for 500 to 800 rupees per design. You do not need to design anything yourself.

Building your website

You do not need to code. You do not need a developer.

Use a platform like Shopify, which is what I use, or explore options like Odoo which has a free forever plan. Hostinger also has a website builder. All of these let you build an e-commerce store through drag and drop. Your website can be ready in a day.

Once your store is live, you need a supplier connected to it.

Which print on demand supplier to use in India

The best platform I have found and used personally is Qikink. My entire community uses it. Good quality, decent delivery times, and their app integrates directly with your Shopify store. When an order comes in, Qikink gets notified automatically and ships directly to the customer.

There are other options like Vendorboat and Printrobot, but Qikink is where I would start.

For pricing, their base t-shirts with printing and shipping come to around 350 to 450 rupees total depending on the quality and print type. Start with the cheapest option. Do not overthink quality at the beginning. Design is what matters most. If your design is strong, people will buy even if the fabric is not premium.

Sell at 800 to 1200 rupees. That is the sweet spot in this market. Your margin before ads is 350 to 800 depending on your cost and price. Students in my program sell at these price points every single day.

If a customer gets a damaged product or wrong size, Qikink replaces it for free. If a customer wants a refund, you can offer exchange instead since this is a custom printed item made on demand.

Running ads to get customers

You need Meta Ads. Facebook and Instagram. That is the primary traffic source for this business in India.

Create a Sales campaign. Build your ad sets with targeting around the interests that match your design theme. Selling a Shiv Ji design? Target people interested in religious content, bhakti content, Mahashivratri. Selling a gaming t-shirt? Target gaming pages and apps.

Your ad creative is a simple mockup of the t-shirt design. Use websites like Printful mockup generator or just search for plain t-shirt mockups in your supplier dashboard. Place your design on the mockup, write a caption, add a Shop Now button with your product page link.

Run 10 ad sets in one campaign. Different interest groups. Same creative. Wait 7 to 10 days. See which ad sets are delivering sales profitably. Cut the ones that are not. Scale the ones that are working by duplicating them and increasing budget.

You do not need a company registration to start. A PAN card is enough. Once sales are coming consistently, get a GST number. If you are a minor, run it under a parent or sibling name.

What kind of profits can you actually expect

My business has done 50 crore in revenue since 2017 with consistent profit margins of 15 to 30 percent depending on the month.

But let me tell you what students have done. Mukul started a printed t-shirt business and crossed 20 crore in revenue. Priyank did 3.5 crore in one year with close to 50 lakh in profit. Ameen crossed 1.5 crore in revenue in his own brand.

These are real people, real numbers, same model I just explained to you.

You will not hit those numbers in month one. But you can start testing with 10,000 to 15,000 rupees in ad spend, find a winning product, and start building from there. The people who succeed are the ones who do the research properly, test consistently, and do not quit after the first ad set that does not work.

The honest part

You can figure this out on your own. Watch videos, trial and error, spend money learning. Or you can get proper guidance and compress years of mistakes into months of results.
